Four Stars
Impossibly sophisticated. Thirty second stretches of this film put the whole of dozens of current rom-coms to shame. Sufficiently breezy and subtle while offering developed characters who make real choices. Unexpected highlights? The general attractiveness of the three leads. Marshall cuts a handsome figure with his painfully precise part in his hair. Hopkins and Francis offer blonde and brunette fans equal charms. The music is suprisingly good too. Lots of well placed strings. But the real reason this film rocks? The script and the direction. Everything is so perfectly timed. In a film that is a mere 83 minutes, scenes are economical but the jokes are always earned, never rushed. Lubitsch strings together three or four impressive montage sequences that are no doubt the most artfully filmed rom-com scenes ever to come out of Hollywood. My personal fave? The early exchange where Gaston and Lily discover what each has stolen from the other. It ends with Gaston pulling Lily's garter from his pocket, giving it a gentle kiss, and putting it back. The film in a nutshell...
